megapolisFor a bit of thoughtful Russian rock, it’s hard to beat Megapolis. While the band’s most famous track is probably Karl Marx Stadt, a spoof reworking of a traditional Russian song to hymn the lost people’s paradise, much of their music has a gentler, more autumnal feel.

The group, led by Oleg Nesterov, has a long history: their first releases came back in the late 80s and they appeared at the famous ‘Peace Concert’ in the final phase of the USSR. But the passing of the empire also led to the decline of the band, which largely dropped from view in the mid-90s. They made a comeback in 2011 with a new album, Supertango, which has an appealingly low-key feel despite the frenetically dance vibe suggested by the title.
